So Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne Insaniax has come out, and it's a mod for Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD. Sadly it's only for the HD version so I'll be missing out on it, though I'll be watching gameplay footage of it with great interest. I guess I'll have to make do with the Hardtype mod because I can play that on my PS2 unlike Insaniax.

Katawa Shoujo GRID1: I chose to go up to the roof and found Hanako there. Hisao initially assumes that Hanako is up near the edge of the roof because she's suicidal but it turns out that she spends her time there because she doesn't like crowds. Hanako's fearlessness in regards to heights is an interesting aspect of her character that sadly isn't kept in the final game. Shame too because I felt that Hanako's route in the final game was too short while Shizune's is far too long.
After Hanako leaves, Lilly appears and introduces herself to Hisao. Then they both leave for their respective classes. Hanako leaves for a few minutes, allowing Shizune and Misha to get some screentime before Hanako returns. Once class returns, I'm given a choice between going outside and looking at the map, and I've already picked both decisions. ("Go Outside" - Encounter Rin in the forest then Emi at the school/"Look at the map" - Encounter Emi at the racetrack then Rin in town) In other words, I'm finished with GRID1 now. As a whole, it's very unrefined compared to the final game. Most of the cast seen in the final game didn't exist yet and only the main girls have designs. Shizune and Misha barely have any presence while the other girls get more screentime. The game's aesthetic feels rough with all backgrounds being grayscale and the character sprites lacking the polish of the final game. I want to try out the Beta version because I've heard a lot of things about it and I want to see how it compares to both GRID1 and the final game. 12

Katawa Shoujo GRID1: I decided to try out the "Go outside to the grounds" and "Eat Lunch at Cafeteria" choices. The "Go outside to the grounds" path has Hisao encounter Emi and later Rin who ended up with Emi's lunch, prompting Hisao and Rin to find Emi so she can return her lunch to her.
It then splits into "Look around the main building" or "Go Outside" choices. If I then pick the former option, I get a scene of Hisao walking in on Lilly playing the violin. Interestingly enough, Lilly in this version of the game learned to play violin at a young age whereas this never comes up in the final game. After this, Lilly and Hisao meet Hanako in the Great Hall before Lilly leaves because she left her violin case, prompting Hisao to escort Hanako out of the Great Hall so they can reunite with Lilly. The latter option gets me the scene where Hanako laughs at Hisao's attempt to climb a tall wall and the meeting with Lilly outdoors. If I pick "Eat Lunch at Cafeteria", Hisao meets Lilly there at the Great Hall. She's quite popular with the younger girls, serving as a big sister figure to them, which doesn't appear in the final game. Hisao then meets Hanako and they go search for Lilly. Hanako also mentions the history of the wall she was sat upon in a different scene then they find Lilly in the faciltiies building before returning to class. After class ends, Shizune and Misha leave for school council business and I can then choose between the "Go outside" and "Take a look at the map" options. 14

Katawa Shoujo GRID1: My internet wasn't connecting this morning (and I got up really early today), which prompted me to try out the GRID1 version of Katawa Shoujo. This version of the game is an early version of Katawa Shoujo version that covers only Act 1 and as a result is unpolished in both visuals and writing. Several of the characters also have designs that look different than their final ones.
Personally I find it fascinating because of how different GRID1 is to the final version of the game. Yamaku Academy has a different layout and has Hisao visit the principal before he spends his first day in class. Shizune and Misha have unique sprites that don't appear in the final game, all of the characters have green blazers on, Hanako's personality seems shy but more devilish compared to her final version and Lilly has a guide dog. Shizune and Rin's themes also sound completely different compared to the ones seen in the final game. |
