Drakengard: More attempts. For reference (if anyone can see this GIF), this is what the game expects me to deal with once I get to Wave 8:

From what I've learnt, the first few notes can recovered from if I'm quick, but once I get around 18 seconds in, a single mistake is enough to send me to the Game Over screen. A single stray thought, a slight distraction and it's the end of the line for me. The sheer monotony of having to get to this point for every attempt also means that on some attempts, I'm not as sharp as I could be.

Is it a Monetary Missile or a Gullible Missile? :3
I do not believe those were the missiles King was referring to.

That looks to be most brutal.

Charlie would have quite a lot of trouble on her gloved hands if she were to play the game.

My visual field is like a theater.
The breaths and screams made a mess of things…
Your voice is a one septencillion Hz.
How close would I be allowed to get to you?
Let's die together with the piano after it breaks!

Yes, it is. If I can get past that, then the hardest part is already over. Keep in mind that I'm playing this on real hardware, so no savestates or slowdowns. If I die, I have to start from the top. Good thing this fight is only 2:23 minutes long (though you'd be surprised how that can turn to several hours with repeated attempts).

Drakengard: More attempts. I've noticed that in my latest attempts, I'm able to consistently reach the last few set of notes during Wave 8. The trickiest bit now is after the triple white notes and the double Black-White which throws in a double White pattern before a triple Black pattern. If I can get past that bit consistently, then it's certain that I can win this and eventually get Ending E.

Drakengard: I'm close to victory. Though it seems tough due to how fast these black and white notes move, I can make it slightly easier upon myself during the beginning of Wave 7 if I manage to press the Triangle and Square buttons early enough to speed things up but not too early that the game doesn't load the next set of notes until the proper time. If I do this correctly, I can buy myself more time to play the correct notes during Wave 8. So far, I've managed to get past the second set of triple notes and now need to do the last few notes (the last of which are double white) to finally overcome this.

Drakengard: The Greatest Battle has finally been overcome! After several attempts, I finally managed to get past the last set of notes. After that... the moment of anticipation. The final wave is a single black note that is easily taken out, The last few seconds and the mission is over. The Grotesquery Queen crumbles to dust, though victory is short lived as Caim and Angelus are shot down by a missile from a fighter jet, obliterating Caim and killing Angelus, whose corpse falls from the sky and is impaled upon the tower.

Such an ending would be quite rage inducing. Hours spent completing all the missions, getting the previous endings and obtaining all 65 weapons just to spend weeks on a rhythm game that is completely different to the hack and slash gameplay that you've been accustomed to at this point. All of that just to be shot down by a fighter jet missile.
Or it would be if it weren't for the fact that Caim and Angelus being seen as just another target by the JASDF pilot is karmic because Caim has spent the entire game killing large swathes of enemies himself. Better still, completing The Greatest Battle unlocks the final Free Expedition mission where you shoot down 5 JASDF fighter jets over the skies of Tokyo. So in a way, the player does get revenge for Ending E and they get to unlock a Sukhoi Su-47 fighter jet for themselves upon beating the mission.

After beating the Tokyo Free Expedition mission (Chaos Dragon is not recommended because their shots are far too slow against the fighter jets and the camera has trouble staying in good position. Level 3 Dragon is far better because the camera stays in place and your shots will eventually hit the fighter jets), I decided to take the Sukhoi Su-47 (named ? ? ? in-game) out for a spin. I figured the Ocean Temple would be the perfect mission for this because you fight a fleet of ships during this mission. It was fun, even if turning around is awkward.

With Drakengard now completed, I intend to start Drakengard 2.

Drakengard 2: I made a start on this game. Gameplay wise, it's vastly superior to the first game in that the controls are better, Nowe doesn't move like he's being weighed down by a boulder and there is actual incentive to bring different weapon types because they're now linked to your party members, encouraging you to use different characters.
The story is standard JRPG fare, and isn't anything like the previous game. As such, I've concluded so far that this game is the Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse of the Drakengard series.

Anyway, I got up to Chapter 3 so far. Chapter 1 is just a tutorial level, and Chapter 2 has you deal with some light puzzles. Annoyingly enough, the second game has done away with Drakengard's chapter system, meaning that I will have to do 3 playthroughs of this game to see all 3 endings this time.

Drakengard 2: Chapter 3 was rather short. The scene where General Gismor (or Evil Jack Black as I like to call him) poisons Nowe and admits to doing the same to his father feels a like a complete parody of JRPGs, which I doubt was the intention but anyway, Chapter 3 involves escaping from the castle while under the effects of poison because I'm now a traitor to the kingdom. Wow, I can't believe that they all turned on me so quickly.

Chapter 4 has a filler mission of helping a bunch of merchants before going to a village deprived of water, and it's at this point that Drakengard 2 shows one of it's strengths: Making each character actually useful by having them be effectively against certain enemy types. Anyway, we break into a dam, fight Kelpie and win, do another mission where we return to the fire temple area (my least favourite area) for a mission where I have to gather two weapons for a shopkeeper. Predictably he lets us keep the weapons though they both suck and I just stuck to what I had at the time.

After this, I onto move onto Chapter 5. Chapter 5 has us on the run so I return to Nowe and Legna's homeland, Eventually we go to a town, fight a few bounty hunters who are far more difficult than previous enemies, get a new party member who is a pretty cool guy and encounter Caim (but we won't be fighting him just yet). I also intended to do another level but it was getting late so I decided to stop there for now.

Drakengard 2: Tried the mission again, and after an attempt or two, I finally made it. The next mission wasn't too bad and I figured that Urick is just useful against larger enemies in general. After that, there is a boss fight against Yaha (or rather his Gnomes). The fight itself is well designed, but I absolutely despise that the large Gnome deals far too much damage which made things quite frustrating until I figured out that the second phase is incredibly predictable. After clearing the boss fight, there is another mission to do where I have to fight several bounty hunters. As it turns out, Urich is great against them unlike Nowe which makes things easier.

After all this, I made it to Chapter 6 now.

Drakengard 2: Chapter 6, much like Chapter 3 is rather short, so I assume it's going to be a trend that will continue with Chapters 9 and 12. Anyway, Chapter 6 only has two missions, which is really nothing to write home about. Chapter 7 is where things begin to get more difficult. One of the Free Expeditions allowed me to get Nobuyoshi, which is a pretty good weapon... when you first get it. Much like the Nemesis from Cave Story, it levels up quickly and gets weaker. Unlike the Nemesis, getting it from Level 3 to Level 4 requires a lot of EXP.

The first aerial mission isn't much and the Barriers aren't a challenge to defeat, being easily defeated. The next mission involves taking down 3 heavy knights, but unfortunately Manah and Urick are out of the party. This means that I'm forced to rely on Legna to basically nuke everything with his Level 3 Dragon Overdrive. Two of the 3 heavy knights are found deep in underground areas and after my first failed attempt, I realized that I could just lure them out and then use Legna to waste them both. After that, I have to take down 3 ships. A few failed attempts later, I destroy them and successfully complete the mission.

The next mission is somewhat interesting because you have to avoid targeting the airship this time because you're following it to it's destination. After that is a mission that makes me glad that boss fights have their own separate verses from levels. I return to a familiar place, and realize that it's the same castle from earlier on (i.e Chapter 1 and that one mission where Nowe is poisoned by Evil Jack Black aka General Gismor).
Due to how weak Noboyoshi had become due to me leveling it up in the previous Ground Mission, I ended having to rely on Inuart's Longsword for Nowe and also liberal use of Urick during my multiple attempts to get through the large swath of enemies in the castle. After finally beating this mission, I have to fight Evil Jack Black. It's a straight forward fight and after a few tries, I end up defeating him. There's a mission after, but it was getting late so I decided to conclude things for now.

Drakengard 2: The mission for finding Manah to save her from being executed wasn't too hard this time around, because I decided to do the Free Expedition for the water district this time so I get more money to buy healing items. After that, there's two Aerial Missions which aren't much to write home about (though the reaper enemies are far easier than they were in the previous game; mainly because you can shoot them up close without having to wait for them to throw their scythes.)

Another trip to the District of Shining Life. The weak monster enemies is a perfect opportunity to try and level up the Nobuyoshi, and after beating it, there is a boss fight with Caim. The fight itself is actually rather good; not too easy, not too hard. It even has it's own battle theme, which while not as dark and ominous as expected, is still better than having the standard boss theme playing against the protagonist of the previous game. I decided to use Inuart's Longsword because it deals more damage to Caim compared to my other weapons, and as it turned out is actually thematically appropriate considering that Nowe is Inuart's son.

Anyway, Urick dies and Caim gets pushed into the abyss. Though considering that Angelus is still alive, that means that Caim isn't really dead because they're pact partners. After this, Chapter 7 ends and Chapter 8 begins.

I haven't finished the chapter yet, but I did make a start on it. There's an aerial mission, then Legna is out of commission for the next ground mission. The enemies are the beginning are weak: perfect cannon fodder to level up the Nobuyoshi with. After slaughtering them all for no reward, I move on, defeat some enemies and get a new rod for Manah which is far stronger than her previous one. A much needed update because I'm saving up money for a Guard Earring +1 and also restocking my healing items to get me through these missions. After defeating a bunch of enemies and then at the final stretch running past them because I was low on HP, I thankfully clear the mission without dying.

The next cutscene has Nowe fight Gismor. General Gismor aka Evil Jack Black loses his armour. Congratulations! Evil Jack Black has evolved into Shadow Jesus and after using Eris as a human shield, disappears. Eris is impaled by Nowe, and she may or may not be dead. Either way, I decide to end it there because it was getting late.

Drakengard 2: A mission where I kill more soldiers. Perfect time to level up the Nobuyoshi and use Legna to get rid of enemy soldiers. Done. After that, Heaven's Clocktower itself. We get to see Seere, defeat a bunch of enemies and deal with a poorly executed time related gimmick that consists of making the player move slower. After that, I have to fight General Gismor aka Shadow Jesus, though I came prepared because I stocked up with healing items and equipped Oror's Falconblade that I obtained from the previous level.
That fight only took 2 attempts and his attacks are more annoying than actually challenging. It also has the same battle theme as Caim, though the regular boss theme would've been more fitting since General Gismor is the final district guardian.

After I kill Shadow Jesus, he decides to destroy his own district key out of spite. This concludes my quest to destroy all district keys, and frees Angelus from her seal. Which of course means another Aerial Mission. It's nothing special, and after beating it, Chapter 8 ends and Chapter 9 begins.

Chapter 9's first mission is another Aerial Mission. The victory condition of this mission is not well explained at all. I assumed that you were supposed to fly through all the rings until time runs out but if I try, Angelus ends up getting away despite me being near her. After several attempts, I realized that I'm supposed to get behind Angelus and shoot her with regular shots (not lock-on shots, because then I'm the one that gets turned into chunky salsa).
Anyway, after overcoming that level, I make it to the Castle of the Goddess. The same one from Drakengard now worn down by time and overrun with the undead. I had no healing items because I had spent the money on a Guard Earring +1 (so I don't get my head kicked in during later chapters) and healing items to get me through the previous levels. Several attempts later, I manage to complete the level after getting lost and I'm now currently at the fight with Angelus.

Drakengard 2: I decided to do one or two Free Expeditions to earn some money so I could buy more healing items. Angelus is a tough fight, and it doesn't help that her hitboxes seem inconsistent if I try to shoot her. Her attacks also tend to hurt, with her tail attack being the nastiest in terms of damage (though it's easy to dodge). As it turns out, the best strategy is to press Triangle so I'm locked onto her location at all times, then attack her with regular fireballs (deals 100 damage per shot) and use either the white magic or the yellow one for additional damage (the latter one deals at least 300 damage and doesn't require me to get up close like the red magic or isn't outright useless like the blue magic. The purple magic is useful, but the barrier it creates only lasts a few seconds and is only really useful for protecting against Angelus's dash attack)

Once she's finally killed, Angelus's body ignites and Caim walks into the flames. Personally I think this should've been Ending A and that the remaining chapters would be used for different ending paths like in Drakengard. Additionally, I've noticed that once you fight Caim, the game's writing seems to fall apart (e.g Nowe asking questions he should already know the answers to or how some of the dialogue would've been better used for a different context.)

Chapter 10 begins, but because I spent several hours trying to take down trying to take down Angelus, I decided to call it quits for the night.

Drakengard 2: Finished! I beat Drakengard 2 at least. The last 3 chapters are very short, and honestly I think the game being split into 12 chapters was to pad out what is basically a short game. Anyway, Chapter 10 involves an aerial mission which took a few tries, the first of which was because I was dense enough to forget that I already had healing items equipped, and yet I bought 2 more anyway. The trip to find Seere is for naught and I have to fight my way out of the castle. The only things of note are the Unknown that transform themselves into neon green copies of other enemies and maxing out Nobuyoshi's levels.

Chapter 11 involves a trip to the Ancient Tomb. First an Aerial Mission where I fight several Holy Dragons, who are annoying to take down. Then after that, I explore the inside of the Ancient Tomb which is mostly a info dump with the occasional enemy. After clearing that, I have do some escort mission where I have to protect a ship by getting rid of all the Holy Dragons. As I learned, the map is actually a circle which means that the ship goes around in circles until either time runs out or I destroy all the Holy Dragons.

Once the missions is cleared, the ship crashes at the top of the Ancient Tomb and Eris is revealed to still be alive as foreshadowed by how I was obtaining new spears despite her being impaled several chapters ago. Then it turns out that Manah is now possessed by the gods, whose voice is somewhat less narmtastic than in Drakengard. I assume that Nowe used his new breed powers to dive into Manah's mind, which allows the next mission to take place.
Anyway, I find Demon Manah and then have to fight her. It wasn't hard, just annoying because Demon Manah surrounds herself with multiple copies who love to stab me at every turn. The real Demon Manah creates a bunch of flower petals and create fireballs, which allows me to tell her apart from her copies.

After I free Manah from her possession, she and Eris join the party. Which would be great if it weren't for the fact that Chapter 12 is also rather short, and is also the final chapter. However, there is one mission where they're both useful: The Castle of the Goddess. This Free Expidition allows me to gain lots of money, something that has been sorely lacking for most of my playthrough because the game only gives you scraps of cash throughout. The stage also gives Caim's Sword as a reward and is at least useful for levelling up Eris and Manah. It's such a shame that this stage is unlocked so late in the game, right before the final boss. It's also an even bigger shame that most of the end game stuff costs so much. I also decided to return to the District of Heavenly Time Free Expedition to try and level up Caim's Sword. I died a few times but still cleared the stage anyway.

Chapter 12 is just the final Aerial Mission, a few cutscenes, the final boss and Ending A. I swear that this is the bit that makes me think that most of the budget for this game was spent on the soundtrack and the FMVs considering that some of the cutscenes are just still images. Anyway, the final Aerial Mission has me fight thunder griffions, demons and the Unknown from a few stages ago. After that, Nowe backs out of Legna's plan to fight the gods in favour of going with Seere's plan to replace Angelus with a new Goddess. Legna, unsurprisingly is angered that Nowe got cold feet at such a critical juncture and the two must fight.

The first phase is just dodging his attacks and striking him once. Legna will either send several small fireballs to target the ground or a large single fireball (which is enough to singe off most of your HP) with the main challenge being actually getting to him to strike him. After a few attempts at this, I finally succeed and then Phase 2 begins.
Despite my problems with the game's writing, I consider this battle to be one of the game's better written scenes. It's a fight that neither Nowe and Legna wanted, and it's clear that Nowe is torn up over having to kill his father figure. The fight itself is rather easy, though I can forgive that because it fits in with how neither of them want to kill each other.

With all that done, I've beaten Drakengard 2. I won't be aiming for the other two endings because I don't see much point in replaying the entire game again just for a different final boss, though I could come back to it someday. Until then, I'm done with this game and I'll be moving onto a different one.

Games Progress
Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom: Huh, so I did get around to this one after all. Anyway, I started out in Bikini Bottom, got some shiny objects and a few Golden Spatulas and socks before going off to Jellyfish Fields. That area is broken up into several areas, all of which are straightforward and teach me how to engage with Spongebob and Patrick's mechanics. The difficulty isn't too bad and the battle with King Jellyfish is a nice way to cap things off before I finish the area.
