So apparently The First Descendant × Evangelion is a thing. What.
Transformers had an Evangelion variant of Optimus Prime (https://tfwiki.net/wiki/Neon_Genesis_Evangelion), and Yoko Taro (of Drakengard fame) is part of the new Evangelion show. Anything is possible!

Looks like a lot of drama is going on, with people accusing the developers of Shrine's Legacy of using AI when they haven't. (Hell, that ChatGPT trash wasn't even around when they'd started.)

Things will only worsen at this stage.
I've seen that review and it's clear that it was a troll review that wasn't written in good faith. I wouldn't be surprised if people start accusing artists of using A.I for creating art they don't like much like they already do whenever people write something they don't like.

Allegedly, the CEO of Krafton, Changham Kim, was trying to find a way out of paying the developers of Subnautica 2 their bonuses, because he wanted to avoid "professional embarrassment" of being seen as a "pushover", and even asked damn ChatGPT to help him.

Are you effing kidding me (https://nintendoeverything.com/nintendo-and-the-pokemon-company-pick-up-patent-on-summoning-a-character-and-letting-it-fight-another/)

How does this even work? Pokemon isn't the only property where characters can be summoned into battle. Final Fantasy, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Shin Megami Tensei and Yu-Gi-Oh are just a few examples off the top of my head. If it weren't for all of Nintendo's efforts to combat Palworld, that game would be just another member of the monster catching genre that would've been forgotten about in 5 or 10 years time. Besides, I don't think you can copyright the features of an entire genre without killing it, because copyright would prevent new games in the genre from being made without fear of going to court.

Are you effing kidding me (https://nintendoeverything.com/nintendo-and-the-pokemon-company-pick-up-patent-on-summoning-a-character-and-letting-it-fight-another/)

Quote
Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have jointly secured a patent involving summoning a character and letting it fight another. It’s reminiscent of what we see in Pokémon games where players can send creatures out to battle.

A few days ago the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) approved the filing, which is for Patent No. 12,403,397. This also ties in with a separate patent (No. 12,409,387) related to the “smooth switching of riding objects” mechanism.

The thought here is that Nintendo is registering new patents or modifying others so that it can further combat Palworld. On top of that, it could deter other games from competing. However, the idea of summoning a character and letting it fight another could apply to many different titles that have already been released, and it could impact future projects as well.

The patent was actually first filed in March 2023. The USPTO then granted it this summer before issuing it last week.

This is happening against the backdrop of the legal battle brewing between Nintendo and The Pokémon vs. Palworld. After the game was hit with a lawsuit, Pocketpair implemented changes to Palworld, including removing the ability to summon Pals.

Yeeaaahhhh, this could get dicey at some point, I think.
If the wrong people are involved, anyway.
And now this applies to itch.io as well, it seems.

Well, so much for those domains. Then again, it does make sense considering that Switch 2 is an expansion of the Nintendo Switch and therefore closely linked. So unfortunately Switch emulators aren't out of the woods yet and will have to wait a few more years.

Wait, did Duke Nukem Forever even get early access releases?
Not in that sense, though purchasers of the Borderlands re-release back in 2010 (https://www.gamedeveloper.com/game-platforms/-i-borderlands-i-re-release-to-include-early-access-to-eventual-i-duke-nukem-forever-i-demo) could get access to a demo of Duke Nukem Forever.

Anyway, my point was that just because a game spends years in development doesn't guarantee that it'll turn out good. Duke Nukem Forever took 14 years and ended up with a negative reception, and Yandere Simulator has been mired in controversies, some of which are related to the game's long development time and some to the main developer himself.

While undercooking a game often leads to it being underwhelming or bad, overcooking a game may lead to it bombing harder because fans feel that it wasn't worth the wait and as a result may be far more critical of the game's shortcomings than it if had been released in a shorter time frame. Worse still if the game has developed a reputation for being long awaited -regardless of actual development time- it will develop lofty expectations that make some fans feel disappointed if the game comes out and doesn't meet those expectations.

Wow.

Yandere Simulator started development in 2014, and is just one guy and volunteers, yet shipping regular builds for early access and still in active development as of this year.

Meanwhile, Hytale started development in 2015, backed by Hypixel and Riot Games, and… after like 10˝ years, gets canceled with nothing released or even shown off.

YanDev being a better game developer than an entire team was not what I expected to read on. Like. Anywhere.
Is Yandev still at this? Even Duke Nukem Forever was released eventually and that game bombed. But hey, if Yandere Simulator does finally get released, I suppose that it'd still be less of a disaster than Mighty No. 9 turned out to be.

Based on that reaction, I assume this to be bad.
Yeah, it negatively affects game performance.
Lower frame rates. Stuttering. Longer loading times. General sluggishness.
Requiring Internet connections for even single-player games that are otherwise offline.
Encrypts the game code while you're running it, making your CPU work against you.
Stops you from modifying the game to run it without feedback from a server, so if those servers die the game won't even run.
A major roadblock for modding, too.

That's what I can find out from Google, at least.

Seeing discourse on Persona 4 Revival already.

And also people expecting Gen X of Pokémon to have the same visuals as Beast of Reincarnation.
Personally I don't care much for P4R because Persona 4 Golden already exists, and Persona 1/both Persona 2 games deserve the remake treatment far more, but I'm sure P4R might have some unique content of its own and that would be worth seeing.

Also I don't agree with Pokemon having more realistic visuals like Beast of Reincarnation because Pokemon games have always had a more cartoony visual style, and a good chunk of the Pokemon designs would not work in a more realistic style. It's like how Gungrave G.O.R.E's artstyle is jarring to me because the first two games in that series used a cel-shaded style while G.O.R.E uses a realistic style similar to Devil May Cry 5.

It's gonna release next year and is not related to Pokémon.

Also, Persona 4 Revival.
Considering how Persona 3 Reload handled its content, I think that Persona 4 Revival will likely be based off the original Persona 4 with all the Golden content being added as DLC. The final boss will probably have some alterations as well (perhaps Adachi will actually be a challenge this time?).

With that said, the post got deleted apparently (it was on Bluesky though so I can't access that anyway).
It wouldn't be the first time that voice actors don't get to reprise their roles. Sean Schemmel tried to audition for Black Doom in Shadow Generations but didn't make the cut and Ben Diskin ended up playing the role instead. Things might end up differently regarding the Persona 4 remake (though considering Persona 4 Golden already exists, it does beg the question why Atlus want to remake Persona 4).

Okay, apparently Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing comes to Steam in the second term of 2025 (April to June).
Considering its reputation, I expect nothing good. But suppose I'd be surprised if the Steam actually fixes all the problems with the original and ends up an actually decent game.

Okay seriously WHAT THE HELL

Physical releases are now becoming just boxes with codes inside?
That--

That's like making a book with only the spine and cover, and inside getting some or other code which you have to use to read the book online or something.
Completely defeats the purpose of owning something physically.

Also saw someone on blue bird complaining about a pride flag in a game (that they pirated). On one of the tweets of the creators, no less.
I--
These developers seem to think that discs are obsolete and that digital is the future. Problem with that is that once the content (exclusive or not) is inaccessible, you can't buy it anymore unless you pirate the game, which these companies are trying to prevent.

Also I like your metaphor regarding physical books, because it's something I could actually see companies like Amazon or Ebay actually do within 5 or 10 years knowing society and it's want to digitize everything.

Quote
Hello yuz-ers and Citra fans:

We write today to inform you that yuzu and yuzu’s support of Citra are being discontinued, effective immediately.

yuzu and its team have always been against piracy. We started the projects in good faith, out of passion for Nintendo and its consoles and games, and were not intending to cause harm. But we see now that because our projects can circumvent Nintendo’s technological protection measures and allow users to play games outside of authorized hardware, they have led to extensive piracy. In particular, we have been deeply disappointed when users have used our software to leak game content prior to its release and ruin the experience for legitimate purchasers and fans.

We have come to the decision that we cannot continue to allow this to occur. Piracy was never our intention, and we believe that piracy of video games and on video game consoles should end. Effective today, we will be pulling our code repositories offline, discontinuing our Patreon accounts and Discord servers, and, soon, shutting down our websites. We hope our actions will be a small step toward ending piracy of all creators’ works.

Thank you for your years of support and for understanding our decision.
Well.

Looks like Citra and Yuzu aren't gonna be around now.

Oh well… what can a person do?

Nintendo strikes again.

This time, Nintendo is suing the makers of the Nintendo Switch emulator, Yuzu (https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2024/02/how-strong-is-nintendos-legal-case-against-switch-emulator-yuzu/).
I disagree with the stance that emulation itself is unlawful considering that most Nintendo games people emulate are ones that Nintendo themselves no longer make profit from. In this case, Nintendo are still profiting from Nintendo Switch games and are losing money, but even then it's only wrong legally, and that there is nothing wrong with emulating video games.

Hell if anything, downloading old games and playing them is far better than buying them because the only thing you're spending is time and if you don't like the games you downloaded, you can get rid of them without having spent any money or having the game take up any physical space.

So if Xyrinfe Shadow TRUE installed with Denuvo XIII creates a 1KB file, then surely you could create a weapon by putting 1,000,000 copies of the game into a .zip file. Aidan Flamberge will try to download this weapon onto his computer, only to accidently .zip bomb his home computer, much to Alexis's frustration.

SEGA adding such a thing in as a last second requirement is very underhanded yes, and it's not well liked by gamers not just due to anti-piracy measures but also because Denuvo causes performance issues with the game itself. Oh well, thank goodness for modders who will make it a point to remove Denuvo for the sake of modding.

And to absolutely few people's surprise, SMB Wonder ROM has been leaked online (https://nintendoeverything.com/super-mario-bros-wonder-rom-leaks-online/).
Super Mario Bros Wonder getting leaked? No surprise there. And I suppose it's only fitting considering that it's rival game Sonic Superstars broke street date 2 days ago.

It's not the first time companies have tried to punish people for piracy (e.g the constant firmware updates for the Nintendo 3DS to stop 3DS hackers), and it's likely that Switch hackers will end up cracking Denuvo, causing Nintendo to roll out updates to the Nintendo Switch to counter them.

Key word being "no company".
I mean.
It's completely possible a fan or someone with too much free time on their hands (*cough*Cibryll*cough*) to want to deliberately make something terrible.

Especially for April Fool's Day. >:3

And even more fun if it's actually NOT terrible and only advertised as such to mess around~

* explodes from the sheer atrocity of ideas building up inside my tiny little cat-shaped brain *
Some people make deliberately crappy media because it's funnier that way or because it's a parody of the original work. That and I'm sure that any company making intentionally bad products would probably be some elaborate money laundering scam or a group of con artists.

… rush jobs… always terrible… unless terrible is intention…

… corporate greed… oftentimes a part of it…

We need to get rid of the corporate monkeys that harbour such voracious greed.
No company would intentionally set out to make a terrible game, but unfortunately some games do turn out badly due to their developers being overworked and underpaid, crunch time being enforced in order to meet release dates and other problems that exist because AAA games cost money to develop and market, and if those games don't make enough money, then it's ensured that the game will be shelved due to lack of demand (real or perceived).

Of course CEOs only want money now and they want it fast. So they'd rather force developers to work long hours with little or no pay, add in features such as gacha, free-to-play, on disc DLC etc to make more short term profits off the game and to have the game done by a deadline, regardless if that deadline can be realistically achieved or not.

Then when the game doesn't make enough profit, the CEOs would rather blame employees than accept that the game flopped due to their unrealistic demands and poor working conditions, ensuring that the developers wouldn't have time to iron out potentially debilitating bugs or force them to add in Day 1 patches or create updates to add features that should've been in the base game.

And at least developers today can improve their base game instead of either accepting that the game is done and they can't go back and fix it or have to devote more time to create an updated version of their game which could happen months or years after the initial release.

Oh no, a game that actually raises the standard of what people expect from video games. It's almost as if several years of shitty, shady and downright corrupt practices (e.g "DLC" that is just content severed from the base game and hidden behind a paywall, Day 1 DLC and patches, free-to-play games, lootboxes and gacha etc) have completely desensitized gamers and have caused them to forget that video game actually used to be a complete, finished experience a decade ago.

And we're back with another exciting update with news from IGN (https://www.ign.com/articles/nintendo-direct-june-2023-everything-announced). Oh, I Guess Not, huh?

I'll keep it short then. Before I get Switched off--

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a new 2D Mario, and Mario even gets a new elephant power-up.
Oh, and Mario, Luigi, Toad, Princesses Peach and Daisy, and Yoshi are playable. Coming 20 October.

Super Mario RPG from the SNES? That's getting a remake due for about 17 November. Who saw this coming?

6 October marks the release of the second Detective Pikachu entry.

… eh, not feeling like the rest right now, sorry.

So for the Super Mario RPG remake, I assume that Nintendo and Square Enix have finally sorted through the legal issues related to that game's characters. I'm at least hoping that they'll keep the Culex fight in the game and it'd be a shame if it got removed. Also having Luigi as a party member would be neat, though it might not happen.

Can add Lone Fungus to that list of Metroidvanias that Ray's been playing.

Pre-double hard-drive failure last year October… there was. Like. A crisp-ton of Metroidvanias on it. The ones I can remember for the PC…

I got pretty far in Axiom Verge the first, haha.
Cave Story, well, yeah.
Monster Sanctuary, I got pretty far on a randomized run.
Shovel Knight, never got too far. ;-;
Wings of Vi, never got past boss number one. Like. Could've at least made it a lot easier or something. I think I only downloaded it for the customization, though I might be mistaken (and I'm already Miss Taken).
An Untitled Story was fun if tough, though I didn't know it's by the same developer of Celeste (which I did finish, kinda).
Within a Deep Forest… isn't that a game made by Nifflas, creator of Knytt and Knytt Stories? I think I've finished that game, at least, as well as the latter two.

Got pretty far in both Alwa's Awakening and Alwa's Legacy; I loved those games.
Cathedral, I at least got as far as that sword in the forest-y place. Or further, at some tower boss or something. I don't remember.
I made lots of progress in Catmaze but got stuck down a well and at a boss, haha.
Chasm, I've finished that already.
Fortune Summoners - Secret of the Elemental Stone… I think I got to the first boss already. I'm not sure, though.
Iconoclasts, got to the part after the moon. Yeah, that's a lot of progress that I lost last year. ;-;
Iji, well, I've finished version 1.5, but not version 1.8 (the one currently on the computer).
La-Mulana 2, I only got as far as beating four Guardians (Fafnir, Vritra, Kujata, Jormungand). Terrible, compared to my playthrough on this computer - I've gotten all the Guardians down except the 9th Child. This includes the DLC Guardian, haha.
Minoria? Didn't get too far, I think.
Momodora games, never finished any of them, but I did decent in one or two of them, I believe.
Poacher, I don't remember how much progress I made, but it was more than my current save.
TimeSpinner, I think I've finished it.
Valdis Story - Abyssal City, I made decent progress with one character but messed up. I think I was stuck in some underground area.

A lot of stuff I'm gonna have to redo when I finally feel like it, but oh well~
Assuming I don't get beaten to it, anyway.

I'm excluding any Metroidvanias for the 3DS, DS, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, GameCube, NES, PS1, PS2, PSP, SNES, and whatever other platforms I'd emulate.
I don't remember most of their names anyway :))

Opinions:
-- Shovel Knight: I played the original game but not any of the expansions. Excellent homage to Megaman, very well designed, even though I never really came back

-- Metroid 2 -- Specifically, the fanmade version of it that Nintendo tried to kill. Balls hard. Absolutely epic music. It's rare that a game is made with this much love.
-- The Power -- A masterclass in metroidvania world design. Can navigate the whole map with ease, without getting lost and without the need for a fast travel system.
If you ever make the time, I do recommend trying out Shovel Knight's DLC campaigns. Plague of Shadows plays differently though the levels are mostly the same. Spectre of Torment and King of Cards are an improvement over Plague of Shadows due to the levels being built around their character's unique abilities rather than the same journey with a different character and a new final boss.

Ah yes, AM2R. I've heard good things about it and it's a shame that Nintendo tried to kill them off so they could promote Metroid: Samus Returns. I hear that the same fate befell Pokemon Uranium but it's possible that both fangames may've been recovered.

… Metroidvanias… and fun… want more…

Afterimage, Ender Lilies… not working on our computer…

Alwa's Awakening/Legacy, Astalon: Tears of the Earth, Axiom Verge (both), Bloodstained (CotM1/2 and RotN), Cathedral, Catmaze, Cave Story, Chasm, Elderand, Fortune Summoners - Secret of the Elemental Stone, Iconoclasts, Iji, La-Mulana 2, Lost Epic, Lost Ruins, Mable and the Wood, Minoria, Momodora games, Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom, Monster Sanctuary, Phoenotopia Awakening, Poacher, Rusted Moss, Shovel Knight, TimeSpinner, Transiruby, Unepic, Valdis Story - Abyssal City, Vernal Edge, Wife Quest, Wings of Vi… already playable to us…

Opinions:
-- Axiom Verge: I really enjoyed the first one, it was awesome, I thought the upgrades were really cool and creative and I loved the setting. The drone gun in particular was a brilliant design decision. I have the second one, I played some of it, but I didn't finish it yet. So far, I think it's pretty good but not as good as the first one.
-- Cave Story: I don't think anything more needs to be said about Cave Story.
-- Mable and the Wood: I was really looking forward to this when it first came out, and it was a huge disappointment. It was buggy and didn't work properly and while the ideas behind it were super cool it never managed to live up to the potential. That was before the big updates though, maybe it's better now, idk.
-- Monster Sanctuary: Didn't get very far in it, but I thought the strategy aspects were creative :3
-- Shovel Knight: I played the original game but not any of the expansions. Excellent homage to Megaman, very well designed, even though I never really came back
-- Wings of Vi: Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu. Janky, broken, does not agree with my brain.

Recommendations:
-- An Untitled Story -- Probably my favourite metroidvania of all time. By the same developer as Celeste, but much older. Aged somewhat poorly unfortunately.
-- Hollow Knight -- It's brilliant in that the progression really is non-linear, as the metroidvania genre boasts to be. A truly epic adventure and a brilliantly creative setting. Pure Vessel is probably my favourite action platformer boss fight ever.
-- Shape Quest -- Many years ago, I called it a crappy ripoff of An Untitled Story, but really, I was being unfair to it.
-- Within a Deep Forest -- Veeeeeery old, but the world is very cleverly built and was one of the inspirations behind Project K. There's an overworld, with sub-levels, which leads to a world that might not be as interconnected as An Untitled Story or Hollow Knight but is easy to traverse and not confusing while still getting the point across and avoiding most of the game design challenges that come from open worlds.

Ye gods there sure are a lot of interesting games by Kemco.

Like.
For me, the interesting games I can find are (and this is mostly because of outfits T_T ):
• SILVER NORNIR (because Elena and Alicia, and Lynn because she has a sweet tooth like me--)
• Chronus Arc (Kuril)
• Alphadia Genesis (Aurra) and Alphadia Genesis 2 (Elize) and Alphadia Neo (Enah)
• Illusion of L'Phalcia (Tiana)
• Legend of Ixtona (Lufina and Misha, so far I can tell)
• Revenant Saga (Julia) and Revenant Dogma (Julie and Elize)
• Antiquia Lost (Lunaria)
• Fairy Elements (Orka and Tsubasa)
• Fernz Gate (Lita and Toril)
• Heirs of the Kings (Serena and Laura)
• Seek Hearts (Clara)
• Monochrome Order (Mitria)
• Miden Tower (Amelia)
• Crystal Ortha (Margaret, probably)
• Blacksmith of the Sand Kingdom (Valeria, Hannah)
• Chroma Quaternion (Eara, Evaile)
• Infinite Links (Meytia)

And of course the Asdivine games that I've played and Bonds of the Skies and Dragon Lapis~ <3
• Asdivine Hearts and Asdivine Hearts II both have a CAT in the party. There's also Stella, and Uriel~
• Asdivine Dios has Minerva~
• Asdivine Menace has Nemesis~
• Asdivine Cross has Amelia and Lucile~
• Asdivine Kamura has Sakura, and Ayame and Leuke~

• Illusion of L'Phalcia (Tiana)
• Legend of Ixtona (Lufina and Misha, so far I can tell)
• Revenant Saga (Julia) and Revenant Dogma (Julie and Elize)
• Antiquia Lost (Lunaria)
• Fairy Elements (Orka and Tsubasa)
• Fernz Gate (Lita and Toril)
• Heirs of the Kings (Serena and Laura)
• Seek Hearts (Clara)
• Monochrome Order (Mitria)
• Miden Tower (Amelia)
• Crystal Ortha (Margaret, probably)
• Blacksmith of the Sand Kingdom (Valeria, Hannah)
• Chroma Quaternion (Eara, Evaile)
• Infinite Links (Meytia)

And of course the Asdivine games that I've played and Bonds of the Skies and Dragon Lapis~ <3
• Asdivine Hearts and Asdivine Hearts II both have a CAT in the party. There's also Stella, and Uriel~
• Asdivine Dios has Minerva~
• Asdivine Menace has Nemesis~

YE GODS--

Remasters of the first Etrian Odyssey games for Switch and PC (https://www.gematsu.com/2023/02/etrian-odyssey-origins-collection-announced-for-switch-pc) confirmed.
Each with two extra DLC portraits.

No clue if this Origins Collection will be remastering the 3DS versions of I and II though.

(click to show/hide)

There's also all this IGN news (https://za.ign.com/metroid-prime/172880/news/nintendo-direct-february-2023-everything-announced-including-the-legend-of-zelda-tears-of-the-kingdo) about the recent Nintendo Direct. Stuff included:
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom gets a collector's edition that's obviously more expensive.
Metroid Prime Remastered is released, with physical releases coming later this month. No news on remasters of the second or third games, though, nor news on a fourth one.
Pikmin 4.
Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games will be coming to Switch by the Nintendo Switch Online thing. All NSO subscribers have access to the GB games, but those with the Expansion Pack will get access to the GBA games, apparently.
Advance Wars 1+2: Boot Camp will be released in April this year.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will have its Booster Course Pass released later this year ("Spring 2023", so I imagine it's Autumn for us Southern Hemisphere folks). Future waves will apparently have returning characters from older games, too.
Splatoon 3 will have an expansion pass bringing Inklings to Splatoon 1's Inkopolis, and there's another DLC, "Side Order", but it's a mystery at this point.
Kirby's Return to Dreamland Deluxe will get a new epilogue in this remaster, and up to four players can play together. On the same Switch.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3's third volume of the expansion pass will add a new hero and a fourth volume will arrive later this year.
Fire Emblem Engage DLC featuring new Emblems, including Robin, Chrom, Soren, Camilla, and Veronica. Oh, and a new story called "Fell Xenologue" in wave 4. Uh?
Disney Illusion Island, releasing July this year.
Sea of Stars, releasing later in August. (On the Switch, at least. Dunno when the PC version releases, but I'm following the Twitter account so.)
Octopath Traverler 2 releases later this month.
Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon spin-off.
• In March, Dead Cells DLC brings a Return to Castlevania!
• Wow. Baten Kaitos I & II HD Remaster confirmed!
TRON: Identity too.
Professor Layton and the New World of Steam will be the newest entry in the series.
Samba de Amigo: Party Central. A rhythm game. Boring.
Harmony: The Fall of Reverie, from the developer of Life Is Strange.
Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time is a life sim letting you build up an island, craft, engage in combat (I'm interested), complete quests, and travel through time. Wait, how do you steal time--?!
• Remaster of We Love Katamari.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective will also be getting an HD upgrade--?!
Omega Strikers. Not interested, but it's free-to-play and a soccer/air-hockey mix.
Fashion Dreamer. I'd prefer Style Savvy honestly.
DECAPOLICE, from the devs of Professor Layton.
Master Detective Archives: RAIN CODE.

Of course. Nothing Pokémon-related, so that's probably gonna be. Like. On Pokémon Day or something.
From what I've seen, some of the GBA games on offer are the same ones that were released as part of the Nintendo 3DS Ambassador event. And I can get GBA games for free by downloading them so there's little point in paying for any of them. Additionally, I was only invested in Kirby: Return to Dreamland Deluxe due to the Nintendo Direct confirming the existence of Magolor Epilogue.

Yeah…
It's a good thing that you can download old games off the internet and place them into external devices. Sure I could just play them on an emulator but it wouldn't be the same as playing them on actual hardware. Though I suppose playing on an emulator does have it's benefits (such as being able to play Boktai 2/3 and Kirby's Dreamland 3).

I bought Spiritfarer which is supposed to be really great but I couldn't get into it. It's certainly gorgeous looking, I love the artstyle. Dealing with the lost spirits' bizarre dietary requirements is already becoming quite a chore and I only have a few of them so far.

Rotund Rebound came out last week -- I got sent an early version of this about 2 years ago, and the finished version has been polished up nicely. I've been enjoying it. Level 4-8 is a huge difficulty spike T_T

Janitor Bleeds also came out last week. Haven't gotten very far in it yet, and it's not the kind of thing I usually play but it's alright so far. I like how it messes with my expectations -- when the red square thing attacked me in the vents, it came completely out of nowhere because I was convinced the vents were safe.

Got the true ending in Unsighted. I have a lot of mixed feelings about this game.

The combat is awesome, it has similarities with games like Dead Cells and Scourgebringer, but with even more of an emphasis on patience and defence -- most of the time it's about waiting for the right moment to counter particular enemy attacks until the enemy is made vulnerable and can be punished for high damage. Of course, one can attack at other times, but it's less effective.

The platforming isn't awesome -- both the controls and the graphics really are not built for platforming. The jumps are glorified dodge-rolls that follow awkward rigid arcs. The game has a 3D world made with 2D graphics, in such a way that it's impossible to know what height something is just by looking at it.

The way the world is put together is really annoying. There are artificial one-way barriers everywhere that aren't visible on the map and often seem to be placed haphazardly with no sensible reason to be there, so the world is a pain to navigate. This gets even worse in the dungeons, where there might be like 6 different paths available but only one of them will actually lead to something you can do at the moment. Some of the dungeons can be kind of broken by skipping large sections of them using items you're not supposed to have yet, but that doesn't always work. I never want to do the bloody Factory ever again.

I enjoyed my 2nd playthrough a lot more than the 1st playthrough, because you can use everything you learned from the first time around to play the game in a totally new way. There are enemies called "Shadow Creatures" that one is led to believe can't be killed until the endgame, but they can in fact be fought right from the beginning. There is a crafting system which I originally thought was bloated and unnecessary -- there's a Minecraft-style crafting grid, except it's a waste of time because you need to find crafting recipes in the world first, and that's also a waste a time because crafting materials are extremely common and pretty quickly have enough to craft anything you could ever want, so it would make more sense to just find the thing directly out in the world rather than a recipe for the thing. However, using the manual crafting grid, you don't actually need to unlock the recipes if you've already memorised them, letting you get stuff way earlier than you're supposed to.

On my 2nd playthrough I tried to beat the 5 main bosses needed to unlock the endgame in the opposite order -- not only is that possible, but the game gave me an achievement for that. On my 3rd playthrough, I left Downtown during the prologue and beat the entire Factory before returning to finish the prologue. The game gave me an achievement for that too.

I originally assumed that the true ending is unlocked by saving everyone, but nope, that just gets you the normal ending again. I had to look up how to get the true ending and the requirements were a long list of crazy stuff, most of which I had no idea existed.

The bosses are mostly quite awesome, with a few exceptions. There's one right at the end that just copies all of the abilities of the other bosses which I thought was lame. It has a second phase which is the same as the first phase except there are two of it, which doesn't work well because the bosses it copies aren't designed for that and don't play nice with each other. All three of the bonus bosses, while better designed than that one, were a bit disappointing -- one of them was pretty cool but I was way too powerful by the time I found it and it went down really fast, whereas the other two were basically just upgraded versions of earlier bosses.

The game has lots of cool moments but the bad parts are too annoying to be worth playing again, unless maybe I give hard mode a try.

Bars of soap? I think CS Balrog was based on one, rather than a toaster...

I like the Ocean Palace theme. :3
Never started with the Lost Sanctum, though... I mean. I did finish CTDS, but beating that Dream Devourer was tough. ... What was I dreaming, again?

Anyway. I think I'll get lost in the Lost Sanctum anyway, so I'll just listen to music instead. :p

CT had some pretty great songs, though I wish "Battle 2" got more use than it did...
It's probably the circular shape or the texture.

Ocean Palace is great but so is Black Omen. I've done the Lost Sanctum and the weapons are worth the sidequests. I also liked the Nu bosses and it's a shame Chrono Trigger never had a boss rematch mode. Though personally, the Dimensional Vortexes were better. Also Battle 2 was only used in the Monster Arenas but I'm not sure if ever caught on.

The clock-dash was the easy part to me. The hardest part was the whole "dodge Time Eater hands".
Dealing with Time Eater's hands once he's down to 2 HP is the worst because of how frequently it happens. That and they look like bars of soap.

Been playing through Omori. I'm about 17 hours in and nowhere close to the end yet.

There are aspects of it that I really like. The story is quite cool and the music and art are great. The follow-up action and emotion mechanics add a lot of strategy to the JRPG combat and stop it from getting too tedious.

My biggest problem is that there's an insane amount of padding. There are literally dozens of crappy fetch quests, and there are many, many unskippable cutscenes that consist entirely of boring dialogue. It's like the game goes out of its way to waste my time.

For the most part, I think I like Deltarune better.
Crappy fetch quests and unskippable cutscenes you say? Sounds like the Lost Sanctum in Chrono Trigger DS. That dungeon also had backtracking, lazy bosses and a dungeon which is a recoloured version of an earlier one. One cave area has the Ocean Palace theme and only for that area (thankfully the main track wasn't wasted).

Time doesn't taste all that good, anyway... tastes like... something indescribable; you could stun all of Hyrule, Lorule, and Midrule all at once. :p

Currently playing TLoZ: A Link Between Worlds (Ice Ruins boss), Tales of the World - Radiant Mythology 3 (trying to figure out what's with the other still-inaccessible areas despite having won the game), and (as always) New Style Boutique 3 and Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist: Link Evolution (where I took 8900 points of battle damage from Soulburner's "Salamangreat" fusion monster... and it attacked my 2000 ATK monster!).

Yeah... reverse duels ain't easy. May need Destiny Board + Exodia. :p

Managed to defeat Sonic Generations (3DS) boss, the Time Eater, with only one ring left... whew, that was a tough boss.

Also beat 7th Dragon 2020 (PSP) bonus boss, Dragoner Takahaya. Won, and loving the battle theme, but... why no sound test? ;-;
(I wanna listen to the battle theme against them SKY people like Neiko... :( )

...

Right. Not sure what to do next... think I'll play FF Tactics (PSP) and stuff.
(Thank you, ESKOM, for stopping load-shedding for now!)
I remember at the time that Time Eater was pretty tough (mostly the attack where you have to dash through several clocks). That said, I beat Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner. Anubis was pretty tough but I managed to take him down. His second form is somewhat easier and most of is just me pressing the Circle button to spam the everloving **** out of 0 Shift (so I can teleport).

Completed Bujingai (the final level is **** awful and completely jarring in terms of difficulty) and Zone of the Enders (which is good for what it is and disappointingly short). Currently playing Zone of the Enders: 2nd Runner and wow, it's so much better than the previous game.

Beat 7th Dragon 2020 (and am disappointed that there's no sound test). Post-game area in progress...

Beat Tales of the World - Radiant Mythology 3 (and am puzzled by there being AT LEAST two Kanonno characters). Several inaccessible areas still remain. :-/

Beat the Tower of Hera and House of Gales' bosses in The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds.
(Yuga is a bad guy... if I kill him, will I be killing Yu-Gi-Oh! SEVENS' Yuga by proxy? Probably not...)

Huh. So, basically, that third door that's near the teleporter.
I'll try it out once I'm ready for it... one day. :p

Today: beat the ARC-V campaign of Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist Link Evolution.
That just leaves VRAINS' campaign to finish. And the reverse duels.

Also got to Chapter... 4, I think? of 7th Dragon 2020.
Then again I got up at like 6:30 AM this morning, haha.

And finished Pokemon OR Delta Episode... but no Deoxys caught. (Kept its HP low as possible, chucking Ultra Balls until it went out of fashion - and stock - and then 1 Timer Ball and... then lost the battle. Loaded a past save state, just to get rid of Deoxys.)

Also: can't start the Looker stuff in Y, so I'm just catching stuff I haven't caught yet.
(Shiny Golett get.)

... I'll probably repost these things in my own gaming thread one day, I dunno. :p

Finished Persona 3 Portable as the female character... that Nyx Avatar boss was AWESOME (IMO) and the battle theme, too!
"The Arcana is the means by which all is revealed..."
Blah blah blah...
"Eternity awaits..."
And then, Arcana Shift.
So you could say I beat a 14-form boss, haha. :o

Started a male character playthrough, after that. New cycle. He's named after my very first sockpuppet, though, not after myself like with the female. :p

Both, last night.
I also had a Persona fan game idea, but I'm keeping it sealed off within the deepest reaches of my heart, haha...

* takes Evoker, pulls trigger, resulting in a new Persona: the Flower Dragon... which turns into a Pixie... then into an Interstice Lamia... then into a Pikachu... then into a Rune Squirrel... then into a Nebula Wyrm... and continues changing... *

... Huh. Guess my true self's unpredictable.
Fitting, given my sockpuppetry past :P
I've heard that Nyx Avatar is a very long boss fight and figured you'd be fighting her at some point. Will you be fighting Elizabeth?

At Stage 12 of Chaos Legion. Thankfully you can return to previous stages after you beat Stage 9 so I simply did several runs of Stage 6 to max out my HP and Defence. Need to max out my attack before I unlock the Side B stages (and obtain the last 2 Thanatos Pieces) and final boss.

Took Taz down and even got the pink slip for his car so it's now mine. He was easier to take down then Sonny was though I'd chalk that down to my car having nitro boost this time. Vic is up next so I need to win some races/milestones before I can challenge him.

Charlie: ... I need to clear my mind and raise my Sp. Atk or something.

Anyway, joking aside, been playing loads of games lately, haha. (Serious, my Gaming Log thread has all the gory details.)

I recently (i.e. in this month) finished Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, though. Also New Style Boutique 3: Styling Star.

Played some The Incredibles. Learned that I can use the Komani Code (UUDDLRLRBAS) to restore health which does make things easier. I just find it boring even though it's a well developed game. (I'd probably chalk it down to the music.)
Also played Need for Speed: Most Wanted. Made some progress, defeated Sonny so I've got 14 more bosses to take down. Got races to do until I can race Taz and work further up the Blacklist.

Got the Fury's camo a few days back after several attempts. The game is easier than I remember, though I suppose it's because of the Patriot's infinite ammo. Completed the missions, got Volgin's camo and took down the Shagohod. Got past the Eva escort mission (which was easier because of the Patriot's ammo count and knocking Eva unconscious so I could just carry her throughout the level).

Just need to get the Air Raid cutscene, get The Boss's camo and one of the Ocelet cutscenes and that'll end my second MGS3 playthrough.

I played the demo of Aeon Drive quite a bit. The platforming physics is alright and the teleportation dagger mechanic was fun and felt pretty solid. The control scheme is garbage and can't be reconfigured which sucks, although that is planned to be added in the full version. It's generally a bit janky and unpolished but quite fun other than that -- I plan on getting the full version when it comes out, which will be in about a week.

Deltarune 2 was pretty awesome! It's got all the same good stuff from the first one. The battles are all interesting and creative for the most part, I'm liking where the story's going and the writing is generally quite great I think. I found Q5U4EX7YY2E9N to be really entertaining but I didn't like what they did with Noelle, I got pretty sick of her by the end. I might write a longer review at some point, maybe compare and contrast it with Everhood.

Gamewise, I've gotten back into Digital Devil Saga 2. I've already gotten all of Seraph's Mantra's and intend to get them all for all my other party members. Which basically boils down to me spamming Megidoloan on waves of enemies to grind money to buy the more expensive mantras for each character.

And also Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road. I'm now at the Winter area so I need to complete that area before the final dungeon.

Just cleared 9 Hours 9 People 9 Doors and... got the ending where everyone died. Including June and Junpei.

Zero probably did it. I know I took door 3, and the one before that, I think, was 4? (It went to a kitchen with Santa and Lotus and June.)

Either way, is it truly the end?

Can't be, else it wouldn't have other endings. :p

Just a bit gory, though...

A part of me expected one of the deaths, but... I'll try with the other endings when I feel like it.

Playing Pokemon Sunday Version now, with its Light-type (weak to AND effective against Dark). My team's too weak for the second Gym, haha... that Umbreon (Lv18?) wiped my entire team out (they're Lv17, minimum).
So: training time. (The Exp. Share helps, though.)

Very nice! ^w^ I think the idea behind Pokemon is very cool and I've played a few versions and fangames of it, but often I just end up losing interest after a while.

So I decided to replay Dark Spirits (a DSi game I have on 3DS) and managed to get past the third loop (which was pretty hard) and have now made it to 4-1. The final boss on the 4th loop uses the attack patterns from the last 3 loops (1-5, 2-5 and 3-5) except he takes less damage once you destroy all 4 of his gems. I've yet to defeat that boss and the game doesn't have a level select so I'd have to make it to that boss all over again.

I played INMOST on Friday night. It's a kind of a puzzle platformer. It looked like a metroidvania from the trailer, and I suppose it kind of is I guess.

I like how moody and atmospheric it is, the music's good, the world seems really cool and there are some awesome moments. However, that's overshadowed by all the really slow walking segments which get tiresome, the confusing and pretentious story, the mediocre puzzles and the fact that the controls can't be remapped.
Hoo boy, if you love pretentious story writing then I'm sure that you've heard of YIIK: The Post-Modern RPG? Much like Sonic 06, the music is the best part of the game though at least Sonic 06 wasn't pretentious in it's own story.

@King - I think that was Noxid's avatar at the time.

And it's glorious. His avatar was so unexpected that I must spent several minutes laughing before getting on with the mod.

My biggest gripe is that it has a serious problem with "show, don't tell", in a certain sense -- often, when something important happens, the game will rip control away from the player and launch into a cutscene. This gets really glaringly bad at the end.

I was unimpressed by the metroidvania aspect too -- the main character, the wanderer (I think that's what he's called) starts out really underpowered, which is to be expected for metroidvanias, but the problem is he stays underpowered for the whole game, you never feel like the world opens up. The second playable character, the girl (who I think is supposed to be the wanderer's granddaughter, or something like that, like I said the story's confusing and pretentious) is even more underpowered. The third character, the knight, has access to more abilities, but unfortunately that seems to exclude jumping.

Not all the puzzles were bad, though -- I really liked the endless hallway thingy, I felt super dumb for not figuring that one out sooner. Several puzzles involved getting rid of some monster in some clever way, most of those were quite interesting as well.

5/10

In more positive news, today I got this in the first level of Celeste -- it's 2nd place:

I've been making it a point to play some of Charlie's old mods. So far I've now cleared Curse of Il'landriiel which was short. I liked the custom tiles (though it's a shame most of the areas lead to nothing) though I wasn't happy with how the mod makes you fight the Undead Core (as a demo ending) after an already difficult boss fight, (I ended up altering the script to add <LI+ so I'd be healed before the Doctor Phase 2 and Undead Core fights).

Shadow of the Stars however has been pretty fun thus far. Granted my only gripe so far was that the second level's tiles all look the same (so I ended up recolouring the background tiles to darken them). Also having the main character go to the CSTSF just to ask Noxid for rubidium was hilarious (I laughed when Noxid's character picture came up because he's so goth). I also appreciate the idea of bosses having multiple health meters (even if the boss fights were easy). After completing Shadow of the Stars, I'll be playing Shane's Cave Story.

The boss fights are also much better, though I'm playing the game again as Jyuji (on Normal) and it's a different experience. After him, I'll do Rocket Billy's playthrough and then decide which characters I want to play as for Hard/Kickass modes (so I can unlock everything if I beat Kickass mode).
Regarding Majora's Mask 3D, I just need the Romani Mask/Troupe Leader's Mask and Truth Mask and then I'll be able to obtain the Fierce Diety Mask.

This thread's intent is actually to say:
- what game(s) you're playing
- what game(s) you've cleared
- what game(s) you obtained (downloaded or purchased)

Beats bumping, say, a DQ thread just to say you beat DQ9 with all quests (pre-final boss) cleared.

The console threads (GBA, etc.) are for games without threads (Adventure Island, for instance).

Random thing but I feel like 80% of the threads in this board are useless when you have this thread.

Like the nes games, pkmn, 3ds games, KH, dwarf fortress, square enix games, etc.

Most of them just catch dust anyway
Come to think of it, you're right. I'm unsure if Bloom can merge threads, but perhaps she could just merge the threads into one Gaming Thread?

Xiphos Shade?
Well yes, all the Mirror bosses have the same naming theme. Soon, I shall defeat him and unlock Payback Mode...

Spent time killing King Latem over and over in Dragon Quest Swords so I quickly level myself and Fleurette up. Those Purple Mirror bosses are difficult and I haven't even unlocked Edahs 'Sohpix yet...

Playing "Ragnarok DS".

Supposedly, so is Ellen's godsister, too.

Changed my mind. Got the Don Gero Mask and the All-Night Mask. I might as well go and get the remaining masks before I go and kick Majora to the curb.

Thread stickied - may as well, right? :P

So, just 10 minutes prior to me making this post, Yui beat SaGa 3 (the DS one).

With the secret ending involving a Wanderer Volage.

With an entire party of Espers at that.

Beat a game? Started playing another? Post in here!

I've cleared The World Ends With You yesterday.

And started Luminous Arc (1).
As well as Mario Party DS and Wipeout 2.

... Oh, and out of curiosity, Bleach - The Third Phantom today.
Yui's already cleared it, so.
I just need to defeat the final boss of Majora's Mask 3D to beat the game. I might consider getting all masks, but I want to move onto Bravely Second at some point.

EDIT BY CIBRYLL:
Repurposing this thread to discuss games in general that lack a thread, or are on platforms unknown.
