Solar Shadow (version 1.5 out now!)

So, I went on a ridiculous game development binge and spent about 21 hours on this over the past two days...

Fan favourite, Selena Daria van der Merwe, has woken up in the middle of the woods just as night is falling. She has until 3AM to get out -- if she doesn't, she'll be cursed forever.

And maybe some dark secrets will be uncovered along the way...?

It's pretty short, but there are 6 endings.

Sorry about the music (there's only one song), I am suffering from a rather nasty Windows 8-related screwup and my computer is glitching out and GM8's sound system is pretty much broken to oblivion :( I will need to use GMS for my next game.

I have played it and I'll make pros and cons review


+Time system. Really nice

-No save points early into game. make it something like VVVVVV with a save point every 1 or 2 rooms. Especially with the freefall spike rooms.
-In the first part the tiles are... dull. And non-differential.
-Backgrounds are just non-exiting to watch.
-No walking animation.
-The physics are too strange. Walking speed, jump. ect.
-The .exe cannot be closed for some reason.

Although I listed more Cons than Pros. I hope this early review does not make you feel depressed and make you abandon this project, but rather inspire you to do better. This has potential but it needs more work than just 2 days. I know you can do it properly. :)

I considered save points, but I wasn't sure how to make them fit in with the time system. I'll see what I can do. Legend of Grey Moon, one of my earlier games which is very similar, has save points, but it's also a lot harder. The physics and some of the backgrounds and tiles are from it as well. The rest are from Misery of Magic, which probably won't ever be finished at this rate. I could probably make a walking animation if I had access to Serenity's, do you know if it was posted anywhere?


It can be closed by hitting escape from the main menu, btw.

-- Added savepoints -- dying no longer ends the game, but the clock keeps running when you do so
-- Added walking animations
-- Fixed the special effects in ending 4
-- A couple very minor changes to level layouts, you probably won't even notice them

I wanna say I'm truly sorry to... forget like an idiot. I feel like an ass. Here's what I think:
1st: The first area need to be more fleshed out. The tree tiles are not cutting it (No pun intended.)
2nd: Music is very good, props for that.
3rd: When you die and the message appears there's no way skipping it,and the timer don't reset. It just continues.
4th: Physics area again floaty and bulky.
5th: in the second area the purple damage tiles are ridiculous. They are just... dumb.


And every time a spike is near the start of the room and with these floaty physics I'm dying again and again until I memorize everything.

Yet again I hope this review does not make you feel depressed and make you abandon this project, but rather inspire you to do better

The timer actually pauses for a few seconds while the message appears. It's supposed to continue -- if it didn't, the time limit would never actually be a threat at all.


There's nothing wrong with the physics -- it's just like Cave Story but made much more responsive by getting rid of inertia.


Thanks anyway I guess -- I might make another better one eventually, the story needs to be finished and this was pretty quick to make anyway ^.^


How many endings did you find, btw?

So I finally got around to playing Solar Shadow. Got the Diabolical Ending and I might consider getting all the other ones. Not too fond of the spikes because their designs look really haphazard compared to the rest of the forest area.

The song is really nice but I don't know the name of it.
