Title: General Mod Discussion
Post by: Xylia on 14 May 2016, 12:50:19
Not to be confused with General Moderator Discussion.

This should prove to be useful.
The mods are also listed in this thread; they'll be using their thread titles and sorted alphabetically, with the thread starter's name in parentheses.

Didn't @Dianke make a mod as well?

Didn't @Dianke make a mod as well?
"Obscuro Lumen Venenum Aeris".

Which is cancelled on 2 November 2014 (a day after release).

Lily is so over-protective of Dianke that Dianke's even forbidden from visiting the Cave Story Forums, at least, that was in 2014.

Dianke wanted to write it instead, but she never gets time for that either…

Incidentally, it's unfair that Admins can mention other members, but we can't.

No idea where to post, so I may as well post here (since it's related to modding).

Something that @KarjamP said made me wonder.

Image's deliberately saved in PNG to help save space (although I'll admit the real reason for doing so is because I prefer it over BMP). You may need to convert the image first before using it in the game, something that should be very easy.
This raises a question that I've been wondering about for at least a few minutes.

Yes, Cave Story itself uses PBM files (at least, the freeware version does). Most mods, as well as Cave Story +, use BMP files.

But the question raised is this: what's to keep a person from converting the image files used in Cave Story mods to PNG?

BMP and PNG can both be opened in something as basic as MS Paint, after all.

To get Cave Story to read those files, it has to be hacked to recognize and process them them properly, which is not an eady task since one would essentially have to ASM modify its file-loading routine as well as the routines dealing with how the game handles graphics.

Actually, Kim managed to make the BMP files into WAV files and the mod still worked! Images included, despite being WAV. That was in 2015.

Cave Editor can convert the files, as well as remove the whole (c) Pixel requirement that the PBM files have.

Of course, I don't know why people go for BMP usually. (ZarroTsu's rendition of Jenka's Nightmare has JNB files instead.)

She didn't actually convert it so much as just simply changed the file extension. It's like putting on a costume and claiming to be a bear when you're still you.

File extensions help programs identify the file. They aren't the file format themselves. Just because the file extension was changed doesn't automatically make ir into another file format.

Jenka's Nightmare (the ZarroTsu version) is awesome, and I've beaten the (true) final boss, but what's this? A final boss theme I haven't heard? Curly had those "Kamina shades" (Yui called 'em that).

Easily one of the best mods, I guess~!

From what I've seen of it, Bionicobot's mod Red Sands looks utterly amazing. As in, the custom graphics so professionally made. (He was also nice enough to give me advice while working on my own mod).

So will Dianke's old mod ever get finished? Probably not. If so, I'll consider finishing it along with Shane's Hope of Shane mod. Though both mods will have to wait until I've completed Gun.
Aside from that, I'm sure Bloom would be probably be good at modding assuming she hasn't done it already.
